Samsung Display decided to change the original LCD production line to IT OLED production
Related news said that Samsung Display has internally decided to change the 8.5-generation L8-2 production line used to produce LCD TV panels to an OLED production line for IT. At the same time, in order to solve the supply problem of 8.5-generation display panel production line equipment, Samsung Display began to negotiate with equipment companies.
After Samsung Display decided to end its liquid crystal display (LCD) business, it is now hesitant to continue investing in QD-OLED TVs. The company's largest customer, Samsung Electronics, is not positive about whether to use OLED technology in TV panels. Samsung Display has not yet made an investment decision to convert the L8-2 production line into a QD-OLED production facility. It is understood that Samsung Display is expected to make a final decision next month on whether to invest in the production of 8.5-generation OLED, which will expand its ability to produce OLED panels for IT equipment such as tablets and personal computers. It is more economical to use Gen 8.5 substrates for these larger panels instead of Gen 6 (1500-1850mm) substrates used in smartphones. The company and LG Display plan to use the existing 6th generation OLED production line to produce the first batch of 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED panels for Apple’s first-generation iPad launched in 2024. Samsung Display may mass-produce 8.5th-generation OLED panels by the end of 2024, targeting Apple's second-generation OLED iPad. In addition, Samsung Display has released the 8.5th generation IThe production of T OLED panels is set at 15,000 pieces per month, and the initial investment is expected to reach 2 trillion to 3 trillion won (equivalent to RMB 10.4 billion to 15.6 billion yuan). Although the specific investment scale has not been disclosed, this investment scale is similar to the scale of Samsung Display's construction of the 8.5th generation QD-OLED production line in the L8-1 line.
