Guangdong led output value exceeds 60% of the country, accounting for 1/4 of the world

     The 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the inventor of blue light technology for LEDs. China has become a major country in the production and application of LEDs, and Guangdong is the domestic leader. The author learned from the Guangdong Semiconductor Lighting Industry Innovation Center on the 23rd that in the first three quarters of this year, the total output value of Guangdong's led industry reached 254.7 billion yuan, an increase of 28% year-on-year, and led export key areas increased by more than 40% year-on-year. Last year, the output value of LEDs in our province last year exceeded 60% of the country, accounting for 25% of the world.

This shows that the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government are the first in the country to list LEDs as strategic emerging industries to promote. The led industry in our province has entered a period of rapid growth in the past five years, and thus attracted world-class experts such as Shuji Nakamura, one of the Nobel Prize winners, to participate in R&D and application in Guangdong.

Be the first to include LEDs in strategic industries

Since the new century, as countries around the world have banned the production of incandescent lamps, the LED lighting era has begun. European, American and Japanese industries started early and captured more core technologies first. Since 2008, the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government have taken the lead in the country to list the LED industry as a strategic emerging industry, and have begun to make arrangements in terms of planning and layout, capital investment, technological research, standard construction, promotion and application, etc. In 2009, the Provincial Department of Science and Technology took the lead in releasing the "Guangdong Province LED Industry Development Technology Roadmap", which listed the key technical bottlenecks of its industrial chain, implemented "breakthroughs at both ends" of core technology research and promotion and application, and promoted "dual-chain integration" of the innovation chain and the industrial chain.

Since 2010, the provincial government has invested 450 million yuan every year to support LED projects. So far, it has invested a total of 1.83 billion yuan covering key areas of the entire industry chain, and has driven enterprises and society to invest 25 billion yuan in supporting funds. In addition, LED core technology has been included in the scope of innovation teams introduced by our province, and three teams have received 115 million yuan in funding from the provincial government, including the team led by Shuji Nakamura.

MOCVD equipment is the core equipment at the front end of the LED industry chain. It is mainly produced by only a few companies in the world, including the United States, Germany and Japan, but China is the world's largest application market. Aiming at this most difficult target, Guangdong joined hands with the Institute of Semiconductor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and jointly established the Zhongke Macro Micro Co., Ltd. in conjunction with scientific research institutes and enterprises in our province. The company has undertaken three national key scientific research projects and independently developed commercial blue-ray MOCVD. Its market share ranks first among similar domestic equipment. This broke through the bottleneck of high-end LED equipment in my country being controlled by others. After hearing the news, foreign manufacturers drastically reduced the price of their equipment.

Our province drives enterprise collaborative innovation through the implementation of projects such as the Provincial Industrial Technology Research Institute’s Semiconductor Lighting Industry Technology Research Institute, the Provincial Semiconductor Lighting Industry Joint Innovation Center, standard systems, and standard optical component applications. At present, Guangdong's LED industry leads the country in packaging technology and manufacturing technology, MOCVD system research and development, new product development and standard optical components, product standard formulation, patented technology, and industrial scale, and has a number of independent intellectual property technologies. As of the third quarter of 2014, the number of LED patent authorizations in Guangdong was 67,391, ranking first in the country.

The province has basically formed a complete industrial chain

While promoting the research and development of led industry technology in our province, we have also taken the lead in starting the construction of LED lighting demonstration projects nationwide. Since 2008, we have carried out application pilots. In 2012, led was popularized in the public lighting field in the province. The province has so far installed more than 2 million led indoor lighting products and nearly 30,000 kilometers of led street lamp application sections, with an overall energy saving of more than 55%.

At present, there are more than 4,000 led scale enterprises in the province, driving nearly 3 million related jobs, of which 25 are led listed enterprises, accounting for 60% of the total number of led listed companies in the country. Our province has basically formed a complete industrial chain in the upper, middle and lower reaches, and has become the leading force in technological innovation, standard formulation and application of China's led industry.

The development of the

led industry in our province has better handled the relationship between the government and the market, and played a good role in the "tangible hand" of the government and the "invisible hand" of the market. The government promotes collaborative innovation between colleges and enterprises and does a good job of industrial guidance. This "Guangdong model" of benign interaction between the government and the market will play a more powerful role in the next transformation and upgrading.
